Mathieu van der Poel dominated his surprise Omloop Nieuwsblad debut, attacking after a key split on the Molenberg and riding away on the Muur-Kapelmuur to claim his first win in 4h53’55”.

Mathieu van der Poel has added another major title to his expanding list of victories, claiming the Omloop Nieuwsblad for the first time in his career in what was also his debut appearance at the race.

After unexpectedly announcing his participation earlier this week, the Dutch rider wasted little time asserting control over the opening Classic of the season.

The race remained relatively controlled through the first half, with a breakaway forming and the peloton to manage the gap.

Tension increased inside the final 100 kilometers, where crashes and positioning battles began to define the rhythm of the day.

The decisive moment came 45 kilometers from the finish on the Molenberg. A crash involving Matteo Trentin split the field on the narrow cobbled climb.

Van der Poel avoided the incident, accelerated immediately and bridged across to Florian Vermeersch. Tim van Dijke later joined, forming the trio that would shape the outcome.

From there, Van der Poel drove the move, contributing heavily to extend the gap. On the Muur-Kapelmuur, he simply raised the pace and rode away, distancing his companions before the steepest section and sealing victory.

He crossed the line in 4h53’55”, ahead of Van Dijke and Vermeersch.
